Story 1
Once there was a farmer in a village. He was very
idle. He had a few plots of land. But he did not plough them well. He did not
sow seeds in time. So he could not raise good crops. As a result he was always
in want of food.
Some days passed by. The farmer did not repair the
broken fence. One day he sat idle before the house. He saw some goats entering
the garden through the broken fence. He called his wife to drive the goats from
the garden.
The farmer’s wife was cooking inside the kitchen. She
came out and ran into the garden to drive away the goats. A dog was waiting
outside the kitchen. When the farmer’s wife went out, the dog entered the
kitchen and spoiled some of the food cooked by her. The farmer hurried into the
kitchen within a stick in his hand. His little son was playing in the courtyard.
As he threw the stick towards the dog, it hit his son and injured him.
All these troubles took place because of the broken
fencing. He understood that a stitch in time saves nine. So, we should not put
off our work for tomorrow.
Story 2
Mery and her husband Dimitri lived in a tiny village
in Southern Greece. One of Mery’s prize
possessions was a little white lamb which her husband had given her. She kept
it tied to a tree in a field during the day and went to fetch it every evening.
One evening, however, the lamb was missing. The rope had been cut, so it was
obvious that the lamb had been stolen.
After telling several of his friends about the theft,
Dimitri found out that his neighbor, Aleko had suddenly acquired of a new lamb.
Dimitri immediately went to Aleko’s house and accused him of stealing the lamb.
Aleko denied taking it and led Dimitri into his backyard. It was true he had just
bought a lamb, he explained, but his lamb was black. Ashamed of having acted so
rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him. While they were
talking, it began to rain and Dimitri stayed in Aleko’s house until the rain
stopped. When he went outside half an hour later, he was astonished to find
that the little black lamb was almost white. Its wool, which had been dyed black,
had bee washed clean by the rain.

Story 4
The honest farmer told his wife that honesty is the best policy and that he would first try to find out the person who had lost it. The owner of the purse, a very wealthy man, was at last discovered by the farmer. The rich man took the purse and gave him thanks, but no reward; the wife rebuked her husband for his foolishness. The farmer kept saying, “Honesty is the best policy.”
There was a bad man in a village. He always did evil
work. He did all sorts of mischief to the village. But when he did any wrong.
He would say. “God had it done by me.”
One day the bad man was stealing some mangoes from the
garden of a neighbor. The owner of the garden saw him stealing the mangoes. He
hurried to the garden.
“Why are you stealing mangoes from my garden?” asked
the owner of the garden.
“Because God is getting it done by me.” replied the bad man. The owner of the
garden said nothing. He took a stick and was waiting for the bad man till he
came down from the tree. When the bad man came down, the owner of the garden
caught hold of him and began to beat him with the stick.
“Stop,” said the bad man, “What have I done to
deserve it?”
“God is having it done by me.” Replied the owner of
the garden. “I can’t stop unless God gets it done by me.”
“Oh! It’s unbearable. Be kind, Sir, stop beating.
I’ll return all the mangoes to you. I promise I will never do such a wrong in
future,” cried the bad man.
“All right,” said the owner of the garden. “I stop
but you must confess when you have done any wrong, never say, God it done by
you. God has given man conscience and reason to judge what is right and what is
wrong. The evil-doers shall be punished but the good shall be rewarded. So do
good deeds and avoid wrong.”
The bad man left the place. There after he did no
mischief to his fellow villagers.
Story 4
There lived a poor but worthy farmer in a village.
With the small income of his few acres of land, he used to support himself, his
wife and seven children. One day while walking through the fields, he was
thinking of how he could add to his income. Suddenly he found a purse of gold
dropped by a passer-by. He carried it home and showed it to his wife who
advised him to use it or at least a part of this for themselves.
